AED 200 reflection

My expectations for this course were to basically learn more about art and maybe to learn enough to where as I may be able to find art interesting in the future. For the most part these expectations were met. I learned a lot about art as well as the history and movement within art. I don't necessarily find art that interesting but more so than before this class. This class has taught me a lot about elements, exhibits, techniques, etc. Art is still the same to me as it was in week 1, "art to me is a way of communicating and expressing feeling in ways other than talking". I did not have a favorite artist in week 1 and I still do not really have a favorite. I tend to like the art that connects in some way to me or attracts my eye. I did find Henri Matisse interesting throughout this course however. After taking this course online, I feel it was best suited for my skill level. I am not very skilled artistically and this course kept me from seeing other people art and being discouraged by it. Online courses are very convenient and gives you a little wiggle room as far as scheduling. I would take another online course after this one. This one was fun. I like the blogging, and uploading of things, photobucket etc. Things I don't tend to use much.

The three inspirational self portraits I selected because. I felt they were the best examples of focusing in on ones own self. I think they used their own respective media's to a tee.

I chose to use just simple pencil to do a portrait of myself. I chose this because, I'm a terrible drawer and using anything other than a pencil would be worse off. This also is the challenge I faced and I dont think I overcame it. This piece represent me simply because it's supposed to be a self portrait. I used shape, space and form in this portrait.
Overall I enjoyed working on this. I wasn't thrilled about visiting the museum for a third time or the drawing myself part, but trying is always fun. I do not like my final work, I think it is terrible.

Greenberg on Art Criticism: An Interview by T.J. Clark:

This video was just basically about how criticizing art is basically a big deal. This is a task that shouldn't be taken lightly and that everything needs to be taken into account before any decisions are to be made.

Greenberg on Pollock: An Interview by T.J. Clark:

This video is about how Greenberg criticized Pollock works. It talked about how many people never considered Pollock's work a success. In fact, Greenberg classified many pieces as failures for not fitting.

An Introduction to the Italian Renaissance (Giorgio Vasari):

This video discussed the movement of art during the Italian Renaissance time period. It discussed many of the works of some of the big name artists. One of them being Giotto. He was one of few that brought livelihood to a painting.

The Critics: Stories from the Inside Pages

This video is basically explaining the process in which critics use when working. This talks about what makes a good critic and that they have to remain away from giving true feelings but judge from a neutral field and give suggestions.

The Colonial Encounter: Views of Non-Western Art and Culture:

This video talks a lot about symbolism in art and different things.Their was a lot of history about beliefs of Africans.

Jackson Pollock: Michael Fried and T.J. Clark in Conversation:

This video is about the different styles used by Michael Fried and T.J. Clark. They both had differences in the way the critiqued art. They discuss how this happens a lot when dealing with modern art.

2. Most of the videos related to the art criticism project. It gave different perspectives and views in which i may be able to implement in my own strategy.

3. These videos as a whole gave a better understanding of art criticism. There were a couple that I could have done without but as a whole it got repetitive in a way but, instilled in me what I should keep in mind while criticizing.

Project 4

Project 4 was frustrating at times. It was hard deciding on what theme or how far to go with the theme and what I can intertwine it with.

I ran into some trouble when my power point trial expired on me. This made required me to use extra time to complete the project.

Overall I enjoyed the process even though it was long and drawn out.

I am happy with the art that I chose!

Lowdown on Lowbrow- West Coast Pop Art

This video talked about the style of lowbrow. It talked about the simularities and differences with lowbrow and pop art. It is very similar to pop art. It was highly influenced by car culture, folk arts and car culture.

Displaying Modern Art- The Tate Approach

This video gave the history of the Tate museum. It showed how art is arranged throughout the museum. This video shows how the museum creator divides the museum into groups separated by themes. The art works are grouped accordingly. This relates to our project but on a much larger scale.

Bones of Contention: Native American Archaeology

This video was about the Indian burial grounds. It talked about how important it was and how people fought to keep bones from being dug up. This video always talked about a study that compared brain size to the intelligence in that size. That was interesting.

George Eastman House: Picture Perfect

This talks about the history of George Eastman. It tells about his inventions of cameras. It states his numerous photograph collection that he possessed as well as his cameras found in the house. This house is found in nearby Rochester.

2.I think the video about Displaying Modern Art- Tate Approach was the only video that kind of related to our project. This relates because this is basically what we are doing on a much smaller scale and simulated through a power point.

3.The videos don't really add much to my understanding. Some of them has nothing to do with anything we are doing I feel. Just the video I mentioned above related I think.

Matisse and Picasso

I chose this video at random.
This video talks about the up and coming about these to artists. How they were brought to be famous. It tells the differences in styles as well. Matisse as strategically planning each of his works and Picasso on impulse. A lot of this is talked about in the book. I liked this video it provided more of an explanation of the two artists.


Dance at the Moulin de la Galette (Renoir)

I chose this video at random as well as the rest of them.
Painting techniques such as the lighting and strokes with the brush were key concepts about this video. It also gave some historical conditions of the 19th century about women's roles and conditions they were forced to work.I liked this video it went along with the text where it talks about Renoir

Abstract Expressionism and Pop: Art of the 50's and 60's

This video was chosen at random.
This video discusses various artists through out this time period. The most well known to me was Andy Warhol. This video gives insight into how colors and techniques were used to provide abstracts. The book touches on this a little bit and also touches on Andy Warhol a bit.This video was very informative.

The Sunday on la Grand Jatte

This video was selected at random. The video talks about the techniques used to make this painting. It discusses the significance of the monkey and when it was added to the painting. I liked this video. The readings in the book provide for a better understanding of the video to help understand some of the techniques.

My Mask

My mask- I used the three inspirational images below to create my mask. I sketched this in my sketch pad and went on to use water colors to paint it. My paint job is pretty pitiful but that can be attributed to my lack of artistic ability as well as the cheap paintbrush I used. I tried to take the hair from the one image and use it a little different in mine. I took a crown from one of the images and used the striped black and white from the other. I added some of my own color. I also tried to use unity but may have not done a great job of that. I tried not to make the mask to complicated so it would have the element of harmony. I also tried to use balance with the stripes,some unfortunately are unequal in size. I also included balance in the 2 red dots that were supposed to be jewels, on either side of the chin. Overall I enjoyed making this mask. I always enjoyed looking at the African mask and the chance to make one myself was neat. I enjoyed working with the water colors again on this mask.

African Art: Cultural Meaning

I chose this video because of all the styles in these last few chapters, I feel I like the African style best. Something interesting I learned from the video is that most of the artwork found in museums is no more than 200 years old. This is because the materials they are usually made with. This video went into detail about the African mask. This coincides with the textbook because the textbook touches on the beliefs and uses behind the African mask but the video takes it further and shows demonstrations. I like this video, I feel it helped explain more than the textbook actually does, especially in regards to the masks.

African Art- Legacy of Oppression

I chose this video as a follow up to the previous African Art video I watched. These video were short so I felt it would keep my attention and I wouldn't tune out. This video taught me a little about the African history regarding the previous kings and rulers. This video went into great detail to talk about the African mask even more so then the previous video. Both videos kind of coincide with each other as well as the textbook. Both these video are a good tool to use when teaching about the African style whether an online course or traditional style. These were both very helpful in understanding. It helped that the videos weren't very long.

Buddhism:

I chose this video because I wanted to learn a little more about the Buddhism way. Tiger Woods seems to always mention getting away from his Buddhist foundation while struggling with his personal situation, so i wanted to learn more since I have the opportunity. This video taught me about Buddhism belief and not feeding into desires or filling ego. This part of the video helped me understand what Tiger was actually relating to. I also learned about Nirvana in this video. This video was a good video that picked up from the text. This video placed more emphasis on the Buddha inspired things around the world more so then the text. I liked this video, it helped me understand Buddhism better than just reading about it. I think hearing it and seeing visuals helps the learning process to something your not accustomed to.

Hinduism.

I chose this video because it was another short one. Also because Buddhism was interesting so I figured this would be as well. This video talked about the cycles in life, death and rebirth, as well as the belief in reincarnation. This video talks about how many gods are believed in and it doesn't centralize around one god. This video went along with the the briefing in the text just as the rest of them did. I liked this video and feel it is needed to help understand Hinduism.

Albright-Knox Art Museum- Visit # 2

The Exhibit was the Albright- Knox Art Museum. The theme was of the exhibit I think was very Historical yet Artistic( naturally). It gave a high class feeling being in there.
The lighting in the gallery was normal by my standards I would say. It was the perfect lighting to see every aspect of every piece of art. It was bright, but not to bright. There was no glares produced from the lighting. The colors used on the walls were a plain white for the most part. Upstairs there was a room where there was a pale light blue used. Materials used in the interior architecture of the gallery I guess were of normal dry wall, sealed and painted. It had all the materials used in the individual artworks as well. There were many sculptures throughout. The hallways were not over crowded by any means. The hallways kept it wide open so that every view of a artwork was in great space, and let you focus on just that one piece at a time. The movement was easy and easy to navigate through. The elevator to the second level is kind of hidden but following the map it was easily accessible. The artworks are lined though out the walls at just about the same height. It allowed your eyes to stay at one level throughout the tour going from piece to piece with the exception of the sculptures in various areas. The artworks were usually in a gold colored frame, in classical condition. The canvas painting however were no framed and were of various scales. Next to each piece of were there was a small plaque with the artists, name, year, title of work, the media used, and who the piece was donated by and when. There was approximately 5-10 feet between each art piece. In some areas it was a little bit more depending on what kind of art it was. Most of the framed works were of that.

Late Gothic Art and Architecture: England 1400-1547

1. I chose this video to watch for the simple reason it was the first one on the list of videos. I felt since i just read about gothic architecture it wouldn't be too hard to understand for the most part.

2. Some of the concepts I learned were:
-Gothic art and architecture was most prominent during the middle ages.
- People would come from all over to see the architecture and art, such as stained glass in the windows.
- Most architecture was built larger than in previous periods of time.

3. This video goes along with the readings from the text by the simple fact that chapter 15 teaches a little about gothic art and architecture. The readings explain about the transitions of art from time period to time period.
4. This video interested me a little. It wasn't as dry as I thought it would be. It helped that I watched this video right after I read about gothic art. This video was informational and a helpful tool to help understand things.

Cataclysm: The Black Death Visits Tuscany

1. I chose this video 2nd because it sounded like it might be more interesting than say...the La Primavera video.
2. The key concept I took away from this video was the concept of three dimensional works. I also learned about the history about the black death and how art was during this time period.
3. This video related to the text because the texts talks a little bit about the same artists in this time period.
4. I learned a good deal of history from this video. I think it was good video to show the history and the movement of art during that time.

A World Inscribed: The Illuminated Manuscript

1. I chose this video to watch at random. I didn't really have a preference of videos to watch after I chose the first couple.
2. Concepts- Monks were required to read and write textbooks. They had to work long days in silence making books to pass on knowledge. They believed sins would be forgiven for the words written in books. Schools were created at rapid pace in comparison to the production of books.
3. This relates to the readings in the text was about the printing press in chapter 15. The printing press is mentioned to replace the monks writing books in the video.
4. I liked this video. I found it to be very informational, as far as learning about monasteries and monks and what they had to do to keep knowledge to pass on generations.

The Drawings of Michelangelo

1. This was the last video I chose, mostly because I have heard about Michelangelo even before this taking this class. The text mentions him as well so i felt i could relate better.

2. I learned a lot about Michelangelo in this video. I felt the real concept was more about how Michelangelo was such a perfectionists in his works.

3. This video relates to the texts because Michelangelo is the one of the prominent artists mentioned throughout chapter 15 in our book.

4. I felt this video was the least interesting to me. It was kind of dry in my opinion. This could be in part because I was up real late watching it and just wanted to get through it while struggling to stay awake.

installation

Installation art is art that is or has been installed, arranged in a place either by an artist or as specified by an artist.
Any materials may be used in installation art.
People make installation art to put a new meaning into art. It takes art to new levels and defines it on their terms.
I found Robert Filliou- 7 Childlike Uses of Warlike Materials_ in this he used wood , metal , broken glass and clothing. I found this interesting because of all of the different materials.

I did mine with the theme of Disc Golf but in the hall way. I used various colors of my frisby golf discs.

Disc Golf is one of my favorite things to do so i tried to arranged them in different ways until i got a shape that took the spotlight from the hallway. Some of my discs were of tye die and other were solid colors. It is on a wood floor with a hall of white walls.

I was at a loss for an idea for a while, before realizing it was sitting right in front of me. Disc Golf! 10 discs were used- 4 tye dye, 3 orange, 1 black 1 yellow and 1 blue

I wasn't really inspired by anything i saw in the videos or text though...

I located this in the hall way because i thought it would be able to capture the eye easier with no distractions

Through the eyes of a sculpture
This video was interesting. One concept i found interesting was the extent an artist went to find his own materials. Such as picking his/her own individual stone or marble. I also found it interesting as to how they test the rocks for cracks in them and how they can tell if it is cracked.

Glass and Ceramics

This video was the one i found to be most familiar with. It made me remember my freshman and sophmore year in high school where I took Ceramics I and Ceramics II. The modeling and the shaping of clay to form they want it and then, firing it at just the right temperature in the kilm before being able to apply glazes and what not. It was interesting to see some one glaze it b using his bare hands. In my class my projects would be fired in the kilm, brought back to me to paint with a glaze and then fired again.

Installation art

This video was most difficult to understand I thought. I guess it was because I was trying to figure out where to go for my project the whole time while watching. I was getting confused on what to do, I kept seeing large projects and was wondering if that was expected of me. The most interesting thing with that is the planning process that goes along with it.

Praire Style

I found the Tomak house to be very interesting. From the layers of horizontals to the lines everything seemed to follow. Everything was in perfect unity. It was almost looked like a vacation home from the inside but from the outside almost look like a school. Very unique architecture. All of the views in each house were exquisite and I liked them.

The Chapter for the most part were more of a brief introduction into the topics, with the exception of the one that gave an evolution history. The videos helped to explain the concept and really show the process and end result of things.

The videos helped me overall with an understanding of each topic, with the exception of the installation art video. The installation art video was almost too confusing for me to understand what is truly meant by it.

This is my logo! It is my initials on top of a globe- Signifying the conquering of the world. Whether it is a self logo or used for a company one day- it will always be my stamp on top of the world. I was going to put water color into it to spruce it up but believe it or not this took me about 45 minutes to draw. It might just be my best ever, sadly! I'm not artistically inclined. I tried to used what I learned in the value scale to help shadow and provide a little texture to it in place of using colors. I actually had a little fun. I wanted to put something in there about my idol, my man crush...lol, the greatest athlete in the world...Kobe Bryant...but unfortunately I'm not that skilled to draw, so I had to go with the basics. The world was originally going to be half basketball and transition into a globe, since basketball is my favorite sport, but in my sketches my bball kept looking like a volleyball or a baseball so I gave up on it. I found the video to be helpful, but i kid of went off and had an idea in my head and tried to stick with it!

Justin and I did not share any of the same images as each other.

Shirley and I on the other hand had two of the same images selected: The Wedding, Ca-Gari Melchers-1982, oil on canvas and Dinamismo Di un Cane- Gia Como Balla-1912, oil on canvas.
The reasons for our connections or selection of Dinamismo Di un Cane is relatively the same as each other "walking dogs". However her connection or interpretation of The wedding is different: she wrote: This painting draws me in because of the expressions on the bride and groom's face. I feel like both parties are dreading the wedding. He seems like a heavy burden has just been placed upon his shoulders. While the bride looks scared but almost in a trance-like state, accepting her fate. It is her meditative state that connects me to this painting. I took a course at Daemen College that taught me how to get into that state of mind.

I didn't really see any more art that caught my eye except on Justin's blog I liked 100 Cans' by Andy Warhol. I don't really connect with it other than the fact that I eat a lot of Campbells soup, but it was a neat painting to look at.

Getting a chance to review other blogs, was fun. It was fun to read some of the interpretations of the artwork, especially the one that was the same as mine and seeing two different connections.

Albright-Knox Art Museum

I recently visited the Albright- Knox Art Gallery on Saturday, June 19^th. This was the 1^st time I was ever at this art museum or any art museum for that matter period. It was an interesting experience. I wasn’t sure how the experience was going to be before going in though. I thought it might be really boring, but upon going there I wasn’t bored. There were some pieces of art that made an impression on me, some that I felt connected with and some that I felt I wanted to know more about.

The Three pieces of art that made an impression on me are:

1.) The Wolves by Franz Marc in 1913- This piece was done with oil on canvas. This made an impression on me because it was almost like a real habitat of wolves only through art. The longer I looked and the closer I look I saw more wolves other than the ones that drew the most attention to my eye. This was neat for me to look at and it left an impression because wolves are my favorite wildlife animal, and I always enjoy seeing them presented in anyway.

2.) La Vie Pay Sanne by Marc Chagall in 1925- This was done also with oil on canvas. This piece left an impression on me I think because it was so weird. It uses a lot of bright colors and contrast and I had to keep looking at it over and over again. It looked like a whole bunch of aspects of one’s life collaged into one piece of art but one where you can tell had a lot of meaning to the artist. Maybe growing up as a child and liking clowns and having a horse. It just gave off a very happy and friendly vibe that made an impression on me.

3.) Self Portrait with Monkey by Fida Kahlo in 1938- A piece of art done with oil on masonite. This made an impression on me because of I felt like you can feel the connection of the artists with jungle and wildlife. You can see the artists trying to put herself in front of jungle and maybe her favorite animal a monkey in her life.

The Three Piece of art that I felt connection with are:

4.) Saw and Sawed by Neil Jenney in 1969- This was done with acrylic paint on canvas. I felt a connection with this piece because it gave me a sense of outdoorsman type. All my childhood was spent outdoor playing some kind of sport, in nature, or camping. While camping I used to love being the one to collect and split the wood, which gave me my own little niche amongst those who went with us. This artist I feel is trying to give you that calm relaxed outdoor feeling amongst men, which I really felt connected with.

5.) The Wedding Ca. by Gari Melchers in 1892. - This was on canvas with oil and I felt a connection with this because this past weekend my older brother was married. This art piece to me resembles a traditional wedding, which was the opposite type of wedding my brother just had. It made me think about how beautiful my wife is going to look in her dress one day. I feel the days coming closer and closer and this piece just made me think about it more.

6.) Dianamismo di un cane al Guinzaglio by Gia Como Balla in 1912- This was also done on canvas with oil. I felt a connection with this piece because it reminded me about my g/f 5 miniature wiener dogs and how crazy they could get walking them. The dog in the piece looks small and playful like her dogs do. It looks as if it was out for a walk and got super excited as her dogs do as well.

7.) Kill Yourself by Nancy Dwyer in 1989- This was done with vinyl paint on canvas. I would like to know more about what the artist may have been thinking or going through at the time she made this. That is a pretty strong message to bluntly put into art and it really makes you think if there is a different meaning underneath it.

8.) George Washington and Three Indians by John Wesley in 1963- Done with oil on canvas. I would only like to know more about this just in the sense of history. I don’t really know too much history about anything unless it has to do with sports. I know who George Washington was but do not know his connection to three Indians so I guess it left me wondering.

9.) La Musique by Henri Matisse in 1939- This was done with oil on canvas. I felt I wanted to know about this piece because it seems almost like a sentimental piece to me. I’m not sure if that’s what is being portrayed in the picture but to me it seems like a mother and daughter creating a bond through music. I feel this piece can be open to a lot of interpretation and I guess that is why I would like to know more about it.

Value Scale and Color Wheel

Creating the Value you scale and Color Wheel were pretty easy. If I had to choose, I'd say the value you scale was a little harder to make. The Color Wheel was more fun to make, and it brought back memories of when I was a little kid playing with paint. I enjoyed working with the paint more because it was more exciting to me. It was fun mixing the paint and watching them transition from one color to the next after placing them on the wheel. I did the the primary colors in large circles, secondary in the smaller circles and i used the outline of the circle to transition my tertiary colors. The most important discovery in this project to me, really was just the realism involved in making the colors. Too often I take colors for granted. Discovery the different colors involved in making certain colors was a neat discovery. I also played around and made many other odd colors that I did not place on the wheel. The discovery i found in the videos was the discovery of neutral colors by mixing the colors across the wheel. I found that interesting. I also found the four different ways to mix colors to be very helpful, which i learned from one of the videos. Overall this was a fun project. The value scale was a little boring but the painting more than made up for it.

Week 2- Color and Emotions

1. Color is the element of art that gives us the most pleasure to look at a piece of art. Color affects a wide range of psychological and physiological responses by us. Color however, is a function of light. Without light, there can be no color. Some colors can give us a craving to eat more than others and some can give us calmer feelings or wild feelings. Weird........I Know but interesting

2. If i had to pick a favorite theoretical aspect of color, I guess it would be primary colors. Primary Colors are the basis for any other colors. You cannot mix and get a primary color but you can mix the primary colors and get secondary or tertiary colors.

3. In the color video what made the biggest impact to me is how the light in Venice reflected on the art works and made them come almost alive. The reflections from the light made each art work emotionally sound and you could really see how the artist tried to manipulate the colors according to the light he/she was expecting to hit the art.

4. The most interesting thing i found in the emotions video is the painting of the Mona Lisa. I think the artist did a great job manipulating the colors to make it have a calm and divine feeling and make it seem more of like a normal person, instead of this glorified piece of work.

The process of creating an account for gmail wasn't a problem as I already had an account. All I expect to learn in this course is what art is all about, why people get so into art. I never found it to be exciting so hopefully this course will teach me something interesting. I'd rather be taking this course online to get a feel for art first to decide on future art exhibitions.
